Topic:
The Quest for Universal Healthcare Coverage: A Comparative Study of 5 Nations and the United States
Abstract:
Of all major nations on Earth only the United States has not committed to assuring that all its citizens have an adequate level of healthcare. Why is this? What combination of national culture or character demographics, political structure, economics, history, presence or lack of healthcare champions, and other factors sets the U.S. apart from other nations in this regard? I seek to better understand this failure of the U.S. system by examining the experience of 5 selected countries that have a national healthcare program and a commitment to universal coverage: Argentina, France, Italy, Japan, and Singapore. I will briefly present my questions, hypotheses, and preliminary observations and analysis. I will then ask the audience to share their reactions and ideas to help me direct my inquiry. This will be an informal and interactive session. Please come prepared to share your thoughts so we can learn from each other.
