Topic:
Executive Compensation
About the Lecture:
There are few issues in the history of the modern firm that have attracted as much attention as executive compensation. The recent spate of corporate scandals in the United States, and the associated collapse in share prices, has once again focused attention on the pay received by those at the very top of organizations. Even those CEOs with stellar performance have not been immune to criticism. Jack Welch, the legendry former CEO of General Electric, was heavily criticized in the business community for alleged non-disclosure of lavish retirement benefits. In this lecture I want to document how CEOs are compensated in the modern firm; document trends in CEO compensation; illustrate important international differences in compensation practices; remark on the stock explosion that happened in the United States; and finally offer some suggestions for compensation practice reform.
