What We Do : Generating Business Ideas

SMU BIG is actively seeking promising business ideas. Below are some of the sources from which we hope to identify potential startups.

From SMU Courses
Terms 1 and 2 - Technology and World Change
- New Product Development
- Marketing of Innovations
- Strategic Marketing
- Venture Financing
- Entrepreneurship
- IT and Innovation

We encourage promising teams to participate according to the following schedule:

Week 12 -

Faculty teaching the above courses will identify student teams with
interesting business ideas.

Week 17 -

Submission of proposals.

Week 18 -

Submissions and presentations of business proposals.

In addition, SMU BIG will also be watching for students who are willing to build businesses based on ideas generated by other students, using mutually agreed upon transactional terms.

From Competitions
The present list of competitions includes:
- SMU BIG Business Innovations Challenge
- Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition
- Other business plan competitions organized in Singapore

Business Idea Pitching Sessions
These will take place once a term.

Students who believe they have compelling business ideas can pitch their ideas at these sessions. This will allow the SMU BIG team to identify promising ideas and nurture them.

Third Party Generated Ideas
We will announce business ideas generated by third parties for adoption and improvement by students.

Student teams adopting others' ideas should reward those giving them the ideas suitably. This is a matter of negotiation between the student teams and the owners of the business ideas.

Others
Students who feel they have a well-developed idea can submit a business proposal at any time, not just the dates on the schedule above. However, to ensure that we do not unnecessarily tax the volunteer time of the Committee members, we strongly encourage students to submit their proposals between weeks 16 and 18 of Terms 1 and 2.
