The Centre for English Communication (CEC) serves the SMU community, with a mission to engender the highest standards of excellence in the teaching and learning of writing and oral communication in English.
The Centre benchmarks itself to global standards of instruction, enabling its various stakeholders — undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and faculty — to draw on its resources to fulfill their academic and professional communication needs. We aim
- To offer academic writing and oral communication programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students at SMU.
- To coach student writers in one-to-one consultation on essays, term papers and theses.
- To maintain a rich resource of knowledge, which faculty and students can refer to for the sharing of best practices in teaching and learning of English communication at SMU.
- To review and formulate tests in the examination and benchmarking of standards in English.
- To design new curricula relevant to the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- To build a vibrant community of faculty, staff and students, for whom the learning of the English language can be innovative and enjoyable.
