Our mission is to promote excellence in teaching through sharing knowledge and building best practices, and in the process grow together as professional educators. Our vision is to build SMU to be internationally recognised for its distinguished teaching.
The pursuit of teaching excellence is about constantly reflecting on one’s teaching practices and actively seeking improvements in teaching for the purpose of ensuring that students are learning. Our team strives to engage faculty in dialogues on the following assumptions, values and norms through the programmes, initiatives and activities we develop.

We run training programmes and we sponsor faculty for external programmes. We are active in various projects such as writing handbooks on teaching, and peer coaching and review. We also research on evaluation of teaching, learner profiling and assessment for / of learning. We recognise and celebrate excellence in teaching through our annual Teaching Excellence Awards, held in conjunction with the President's State of the University address.
Faculty can contact the TE team to consult on matters such as course design and delivery, learner profiling, teaching evaluation, classroom observation and focus group studies. All consultations are confidential.
