Bridging Programme

Introduction
The Bridging Programme was initiated to prepare international students with excellent high school results to do well for the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I: Reasoning Test) in order to satisfy one of SMU’s key admissions criteria.

It is an important avenue for students in countries where the main medium of instruction in high school is not English, and where there are no official SAT test centres to help them attain the admissions requisite to apply to SMU.

The Bridging Curriculum
The Bridging Programme will focus on English proficiency and SAT I test preparation. It will include workshops aimed to improve the students’ SAT I scores and classroom performance if they are eventually enrolled into SMU as undergraduates. Topics will include, but may not be limited to, SAT I testing techniques, English language proficiency, reading comprehension, class presentations and debates. The workshops are designed to expose students to SMU’s interactive learning culture, build their confidence in articulation, which can be helpful in their admissions interview with faculty professors. Admissions interviews are compulsory qualifying criteria for entrance into SMU’s undergraduate programme.

Duration of Bridging Programme
The Bridging Programme is a four-month, full-time programme. Students are required to take the SAT I test at the end of the Bridging Programme and get a good score in order to secure a place in SMU. Students have up to three opportunities to sit for the actual SAT I exams in Singapore in January, May and June. Those who score well in the SAT tests will then be admitted directly into SMU as full-time undergraduates in the August term.

Who Should Apply
The bridging student’s profile is typically one with strong local high school results but is generally weak in or unfamiliar with SAT.

Students wishing to apply for SMU’s Bridging Programme must attain good high school results in their respective home countries, and must have attempted a first try in the SAT test. Students need to attain a minimum SAT score in order to enjoy a tuition fee subsidy for the Bridging Programme. The minimum score range required will vary each year, depending on the competitive standards of the students enrolled.
