The basic requirements for applicants are:

• At least 12 years of education and have taken a national/international examination that is recognised for the purpose of admission. Please click here for a list of international qualifications.

SAT I: Reasoning Test scores (> 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format)
Applicants for Bachelor of Laws must take the SAT I Reasoning Test and achieve the following requirement:
- Old SAT Format: A minimum score of 700 for the verbal component
- New SAT Format: A minimum combined score of 1400 for both Critical Reading and Writing Components


• With effect from Academic Year 2008-09, SAT Reasoning is no longer compulsory for IB Diploma graduates who have studied and taken their IB Diploma examinations in the following IB World Schools based in Singapore. For such applicants seeking admission into the Law programme, please note that a B grade (or "Good" grade) in Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are minimum requirements. Though SAT is not compulsory, applicants who have done well in SAT are encouraged to submit their scores on an ‘advantage' basis. This is to help strengthen their academic credentials. IB Diploma graduates who studied in schools outside of Singapore and applicants with non-IB international qualifications are required to submit SAT Scores in their application.

ACT or GMAT (If SAT is not available)

TOEFL or IELTS (For applicants whose medium of instruction in school is not in English)

• Interview for all short-listed candidates. Candidates who are not residing in Singapore will be interviewed by telephone.

SMU does not conduct any entrance examinations.


SAT I: Reasoning Test

Applicants taking the SAT Reasoning Test should indicate 2861 (SMU Institution Code) on their SAT Registration forms. A copy of your SAT scores will be sent directly to SMU*. SAT II Subject Tests are not required for admission.

If the SAT Reasoning Test is not available in your country, the applicant is expected to take ACT or GMAT. Applicants taking ACT should indicate the code number 5284 on their ACT Registration forms. A copy of your ACT scores will be sent directly to SMU.

TOEFL & IELTS

TOEFL or IELTS is compulsory for applicants whose medium of instruction in school is not in English. TOEFL applicants should indicate the code number 9014 on their answer sheets. A copy of your TOEFL scores will be sent directly to SMU.

The minimum score for TOEFL:

• Paper-based: 550
• Computer-based: 213
• Internet based: 79 - 80

The minimum score for IELTS:

• Overall band of 6.5

For Malaysian students, you may choose to take MUET. The minimum overall band for MUET is 5 or 6.

General Information for international students


Applicants with good pre-university qualifications will be considered for Advanced Standing at SMU. Students with Advanced Standing may be granted exemptions of up to 5 courses. Advanced standing will only be considered when successful applicants have accepted the offers of places at SMU.

Foreign students must possess a valid Student’s Pass to be able to study at SMU. SMU will assist in the application of student passes for all international students coming to SMU.
