Admissions Criteria

Admissions Criteria for International Students

  • International applicants should have at least 12 years of education and taken a recognized national/international examination have taken a recognised national/international examination. Please click here for a list of international qualifications for the purpose of admission.

  • The SAT 1: Reasoning Test is a compulsory requirement for admission. The SAT 1 is a three-hour reasoning test comprising multiple-choice questions that gauge verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities. A qualifying test for admissions commonly used by American universities, it is set, organized and administered by the US College Board, a US-based educational association.

    If the SAT I: Reasoning Test is not available in your country, the applicant is expected to take ACT or GMAT. Applicants taking ACT should indicate the code number 5284 on their ACT Registration forms. A copy of your ACT scores will be sent directly to SMU.

  • Applicants whose first language is not English must show proficiency in the English Language, through either of the qualifications below:
    • TOEFL - minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based)
      TOEFL applicants should indicate the code number 9014 on their answer sheets. A copy of your TOEFL scores will be sent directly to SMU.
    • IELTS - minimum overall band of 6.5, or
    • MUET - band 5 or 6

International students awaiting their final examination results may apply. Provisional admission may be granted on the basis of their school forecast results. Admission will be confirmed upon submission of acceptable grades in their final examinations.

Applicants with good pre-university qualifications will be considered for Advanced Standing at SMU. Students with Advanced Standing may be granted exemptions of up to 5 courses. Advanced Standing is only granted when a student has been offered a place and SMU has evaluated relevant academic certificates.

Shortlisted international applicants do not have to come to Singapore for the admissions interview. Special arrangements will be made for them to be interviewed.

Foreign students must possess a valid Student's Pass to be able to study at SMU. SMU will assist in the application of student passes for all international students coming to SMU. SMU Office of Undergraduate Admissions will assist all international students who have been admitted to SMU in their application for a student pass, which is processed and approved by the Immigration Checkpoints Authority (ICA). The student pass is valid for the whole duration of the course of study.
