Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) is a 4-year programme to develop well-rounded individuals schooled in a variety of subject areas. Modelled after the best of America's top business schools, the curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

This is a value-added programme that aims to produce professional accountants who possess the attributes and skills required to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. They include analytical and creative abilities; a broad perspective to think across disciplines and geographical or political boundaries, as well as confidence and mastery of today's technology. Classes, which are deliberately kept small, average 40 students each, and adopt the interactive-participative style, to enhance interaction and critical thinking.

The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfill all professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

A distinctive feature of our BAcc programme is that top accounting professionals from public accounting and industry bring real world perspectives into the classroom as instructors for audit and tax courses. In addition, the Big 4 accounting firms have committed themselves to the SMU BAcc internship programme. These internships last for a minimum of 10 weeks and can begin anytime after the completion of the first year of studies. Many students can expect to receive employment at these firms by the time they complete the programme.

Our BAcc programme offers flexibility in the choice of subjects, without compromising the technical and professional standards required of professional accountants. Our liberal new-economy approach only enhances the career prospects of SMU BAcc students further.
