Undergraduate Programmes

Q: What is the curriculum structure of the programmes at SMU?

A: BAcc programme
The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfil all professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of ICPAS. At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

The programme has received accreditation by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS), Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), CPA Australia, and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA). CPA Australia and ICAA have mutual recognition arrangements with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and other accounting institutes around the world, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) . Such recognition gives SMU BAcc graduates international mobility. At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education to provide students with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large

BBM programme
The BBM programme is modeled on the highly successful Wharton School curriculum. It is a broad-based curriculum that encourages students to learn across a complementary spectrum of courses. Solid grounding in business studies are integrated with subjects not traditionally taught at business school. These range from communication skills and negotiation techniques to arts and science subjects designed to broaden and enrich intellectual outlook and personal and professional development.

BSc (Economics) programme
Students will be given a broad-based liberal education, flexibility in the choice of certain subjects, yet at the same time major in Economics. The curriculum is similar in structure to the other degree programmes offered by SMU, of which have been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

BSc (Information Systems Management) programme
A distinctive feature of the BSc (ISM) programme is the dual emphasis on the technical skills for the design and deployment of business information systems and on the business skills for analysing value, costs and risks of design and deployment alternatives. The programme also has a strong emphasis on IT project management and will provide students with numerous in-depth experiences with the end-to-end process of defining, designing, and deploying solutions.

A second distinctive feature of the BSc (ISM) programme is the way it allows a student to combine IT with an industry sector concentration and a second major concentration. Students at the School of Information Systems (SIS) are required to take a second major, which is a non-IS concentration that will strongly link the student with one of the core areas within one of the three other schools at SMU.
