The basic requirements for applicants are:
- A polytechnic diploma from Nanyang Poly, Ngee Ann Poly, Singapore Poly, Republic Poly and Temasek Poly.

SAT 1 : Reasoning Test is optional (but an added advantage for those with strong scores; guideline for strong SAT I scores: > 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format).
However, Applicants for Bachelor of Laws must take the SAT I Reasoning Test and achieve the following requirement:
- Old SAT Format: A minimum score of 700 for the verbal component
- New SAT Format: A minimum combined score of 1400 for both Critical Reading and Writing Components

- Interview for all shortlisted applicants

Final year polytechnic diploma students are welcome to apply for admission. You will need to include the result slips of all your completed semesters at the time of application. Thereafter, you must submit the result slip of your final semester examination to SMU as soon as they are available.
Applicants with good results in their polytechnic diplomas will be eligible for Advanced Standing at SMU. Students with Advanced Standing may be granted exemptions of up to 5 courses. Advanced standing will only be considered when successful applicants have accepted the offers of places at SMU.
