How to Apply
Applications for admission for 2009 will close on 1 April 2009.
Please select the correct category below to apply online.
Applications must be submitted online. There are no hardcopy or downloadable application forms. Applications submitted from forms that are downloaded and printed from the website will not be accepted.
After applying online, please submit the following to SMU at the address indicated below:
- Photocopies of relevant supporting documents. Please do not submit original copies.
- Application fee of S$15, if you are paying by cheque. Payment by cash must be made at SMU Office of Finance. Payment by credit card can be done online when submitting your application for admission.

Category 1
Applicants, regardless of nationality, who have taken the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level examinations (including private candidates).


Admissions criteria for applicants under the New Curriculum:
- Good passes in at least three H2 subjects, one H1 subject and Project Work
- A good pass in General Paper (GP) or Knowledge & Inquiry (KI). Law applicants must obtain a B and above for GP/KI.
- A good pass in Mathematics at H1 level or equivalent
- A minimum of "S" grade in Mother Tongue Language. Successful applicants who have not met the Mother Tongue requirement can still be admitted but must satisfy the requirement before graduating from SMU.
- SAT Reasoning Test* is optional (but an added advantage for those with strong scores; guideline for strong SAT scores: > 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format)
- Interview (for shortlisted candidates)
Admissions criteria for applicants under the Old Curriculum:
- Passes in at least 3 GCE A-Level subjects and General Paper. Law applicants must obtain a B3 and above for GP.
- A reasonable level of proficiency in a second language (at least a D7 grade for those with GCE A-Levels, or a pass in second language Syllabus B). Successful applicants who have not met the Mother Tongue requirement can still be admitted but must satisfy the requirement before graduating from SMU.
- An acceptable foundation in mathematics (at least a C6 grade in Additional Mathematics at GCE O-Level or equivalent)
- SAT Reasoning Test* score is optional (but an added advantage for those with strong scores; guideline for strong SAT scores: > 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format)
- Interview for shortlisted applicants

Category 2
Polytechnic diploma applicants , regardless of nationality (including final year students), who have acceptable Diploma qualifications from Nanyang Poly, Ngee Ann Poly, Republic Poly, Singapore Poly and Temasek Poly.


Admissions criteria for applicants with local polytechnic diplomas and seeking admission in 2009:
- A polytechnic diploma from Nanyang Poly, Ngee Ann Poly, Singapore Poly, Republic Poly and Temasek Poly.
- An acceptable foundation in mathematics (at least a C6 grade in Additional Mathematics at GCE O-Level or equivalent)
- SAT Reasoning Test* is optional (but an added advantage for those with strong scores; guideline for strong SAT scores: > 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format).
- Interview (for shortlisted candidates)
*Applicants for Bachelor of Laws must take the SAT Reasoning Test and achieve the following requirement:
- Old SAT Format: A minimum score of 700 for the verbal component
- New SAT Format: A minimum combined score of 1400 for both Critical Reading and Writing Components
Final year polytechnic diploma students are welcome to apply for admission. You will need to include the result slips of all your completed semesters at the time of application. Thereafter, you must submit the result slip of your final semester examination to SMU as soon as they are available.
Applicants with good results in their polytechnic diplomas will be eligible for Advanced Standing at SMU. Students with Advanced Standing may be granted exemptions of up to 5 courses. Advanced standing will only be considered when successful applicants have accepted the offers of places at SMU.

Category 3
Singapore applicants with international qualifications obtained in Singapore, regardless of nationality, whose pre-university qualifications are not from Category 1 and Category 2. Applicants with qualifications from ACS (Independent), ACS (International) and NUS High School should apply using the Category 3 application.


Admissions criteria for Singapore applicants with international qualifications obtained in Singapore:
- With effect from Academic Year 2008-09, SAT Reasoning is no longer compulsory for IB Diploma graduates who have studied and taken their IB Diploma examinations in the following IB World Schools based in Singapore. For such applicants seeking admission into the Law programme, please note that a Grade 7 in English A1 (Standard Level) or a Grade 6/7 in English A1 (Higher level) or a Grade A in Theory of Knowledge are minimum requirements. Though SAT is not compulsory, applicants who have done well in SAT are encouraged to submit their scores on an ‘advantage' basis. This is to help strengthen their academic credentials. IB Diploma graduates who studied in schools outside of Singapore and applicants with non-IB international qualifications are required to submit SAT Scores in their application.
- SAT Reasoning Test scores* (> 1300 for old SAT format and > 1900 for new SAT format)
- Interview for all short-listed candidates who are not residing in Singapore will be interviewed by telephone.
*Applicants for Bachelor of Laws must take the SAT Reasoning Test and achieve the following requirement:
- Old SAT Format: A minimum score of 700 for the verbal component
- New SAT Format: A minimum combined score of 1400 for both Critical Reading and Writing Components
In addition to the SAT requirements, IB Diploma graduates must meet the minimium English A1/Theory of Knowledge scores to be considered.
NUS High School Diploma
The NUS High School Diploma awarded by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science has received recognition from SMU as a qualification for the purpose of admission into SMU undergraduate programmes. SAT Reasoning scores are optional, but applicants who have done well in SAT are encouraged to submit their scores on an "advantage" basis.
