Mr Tan Kay Ngee was the key architect for the Singapore Management University 's new city campus in Bras Basah. He graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London , in the 80s and had worked for Arup Associates, London , for 6 years. In 1990, he taught at the Barlett, University College of London, for 3 years and started the Kay Ngee Tan Architects (KNTA) London office at that time. Kay Ngee won the first prize in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA ) in 1985 and was awarded the Royal Academy Young Designers Awards (1987) and Design of the Year ( President's Design Award , 2007) .
Kay Ngee's portfolio includes the Commune by the Great Wall in the 2002 Venice Biennale, Kinokuniya and PageOne bookstores around the world and was one of the selected architects to showcase his work in the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2004. He is also involved in conservation projects in Beijing , including the Commune by Mount Dawu in Pingdong, as well as boutique hotels in the historic district in Singapore .
In 2003, together with his partner from Istanbul, they started ‘Kaya on Coast', an architecture and investment company based in Turkey that focuses mainly on resort, hotels, conservation buildings and F&B outlets , Thai Lifestyle bar and restaurant ‘Çok Çok' was voted '10 Best Asia Restaurants of Istanbul' by the main newspaper ‘Itürreyet' last year.
Kay Ngee also started writing Chinese articles in the 70s, and is currently a column writer for Lianhe Zaobao. To date he has published Never Ending Summer in 1979, Strawberry Fields Revisited in 2006, and the latest 2008 publication being Magnetic Fields of Cities .
