We strongly encourage students to purchase a notebook or tablet PC from the vendors awarded in the PC Tender for the following reasons:
- SMU discounts off retail price
- Better hardware specifications customized for SMU
- Upgraded warranty terms
- Guaranteed compatibility with SMU's IT infrastructure
- SMU's standard software suite included (only for SMU full-time undergraduates)
- On-site hardware support from vendor
If you purchase notebooks or tablet PCs from other vendors, note that for such notebooks:
- SMU only provides limited software support
- Students will have to install SMU's standard software suite themselves, from the network shared drive.
- Students will have to bring their notebooks to their vendors for all hardware support
How many notebook or tablet PC am I entitled to purchase from the offer?
You may purchase more than one notebook or tablet PC from the offer. However, note that the SMU PC Tender offerings are strictly meant for SMU students. Resale is prohibited.
For students, only the first notebook or tablet PC you purchase from the offer will be loaded with software from SMU. Subsequent notebooks that you purchase during your stay in SMU will be loaded with the PC manufacturer's default factory image (operating system and software from the PC manufacturer only, without software from SMU).
How do I get support for my notebook or tablet PC?
For notebooks and tablet PCs bought from the SMU PC Tender, you can approach Helpdesk for assistance.
For other PCs, you need to go back to your hardware vendor for support.
Can I use my Macintosh in SMU?
Yes but IITS Helpdesk does not provide support. Macintosh support is provided by a Macintosh interest group in SMU. Macintosh users rely on this group or self-help.
What technical specifications are required for my course of study?
No special requirement. The technical specifications of all the notebook and tablet PC models offered in SMU PC Tender are able to meet your computing needs.
FAQs for Acer Notebooks
- Do I need to pay for the delivery?
No, free notebook delivery will be provided to all staff and students .
- What is the vendor's support plan for the 2nd and 3rd year?
Acer engineer will be stationed in SMU for the 1st year. For the 2 nd and 3 rd year, you will need to call Acer and the response time is 4 hours. Units will be repaired by the next business day. If the repair requires more than 8 hours, T-loan units can be made available.
- Any call received at Acer Helpdesk before 2pm will be responded to on the same day within 4 hours within mainland Singapore.
- Any call received after 2pm will be attended to the next business day.
- What are the conditions for the exchange of battery?
Battery with less than one hour of charge (for batteries with a maximum charge of 3 hours and above) will be replaced. For 3-cell batteries, with a claimed battery life of one to one-and-a-half hour, it will be replaced if battery life drops below 20 minutes.
- What are the conditions for the replacement of pixels?
Any LCD screen having more than 4 non-conforming pixels will be changed. No replacement of notebook with the exception of new notebook within 7 days of purchase.

- What is the vendor's support plan for the 2nd and 3rd year?
For 2nd and 3rd year warranty, student/staff are able to get service/support from AsiaPac's two service centers at Funan DigitaLife Mall and AsiaPac Customer Care Centre. For Funan DigitaLife Mall, the shop operates daily from 10am to 9pm, including Sunday and Public Holiday except the 1st and 2nd day of Chinese New Year.
Alternatively, AsiaPac can arrange for daily collection at SMU IITS Helpdesk for any faulty machines .
