1. Who is the targeted user for the Wireless SMU Guest IP Network (SMUGIP)?
It is designed for use by conference attendees, participants in short courses that only requires Wireless access to the Internet . They are also available to people visiting the University on business, working with an academic department or administrative section.
Note that the transmission through this internet Access Facility is unencrypted and is prone to eavesdropping and it is User's discretion to take any preventive measure (such as VPN) as deemed fit.
SMU Users are strongly encouraged to use the campus 802.1x secured access configuration that provides encryption for security and higher bandwidth with tiered service allocated.
2. How can I login to the internet?
Just open the browser and key in any web addresses. You will be prompted to provide your username , password select the user group which you belong to from the drop dwon list. After reading the Terms & Conditions of use and Acceptable Use Policy, check on "I Accept" and proceed to login.
3. Can I change my password?
For SMU User, the password is linked to your domain account which can be changed through the existing domain account password changing process. For Visitor, the random generated password is fixed and non changeable since it is meant for short-term usage and will expire within the limited period applied.
4. If I lost my password, can you issue a new one to me or can you change it for me?
For SMU User, the existing process of getting your password reset applies. For Visitor, please send your request to the relevant University host, e.g. the Conference & Event Office or an academic department that have registered on your behalf.
Further queries can be directed to SMU IITS Helpdesk at 6828-0123 or email helpdesk@smu.edu.sg .
5. How do I connect to the internet?
Power up your Wi-Fi enabled laptop or PDA within Singapore Management University , set your network name (SSID) to "SMUGIP" and turn off WEP encryption. Launch your browser and you'll be connected to the web login page. Use the official username and password provided by your relevant University host, e.g. the Conference & Event Office or an academic department and follow the steps listed to gain internet access.
6. What is the minimum configuration that can be used for the wireless access point?
The minimum requirements are Windows 98 and above with wireless adapters.
7. Why does the radio signal quality in my "wireless client" (on my desktop) show zero?
This is because your wireless device is not connected to the SMUGIP network. Please read the following possible causes for this and check them step by step:
- The network ID of the wireless device is incorrect. The network ID is case-sensitive. Our network ID is 'SMUGIP'.
- The wireless device is out of range from the designated area.
- Make sure there is no wireless interference (from other 2.4 GHz devices) to your wireless device.
8. Why do I get a poor range with wireless access?
To increase the wireless coverage, follow the procedures below to enhance the "Radio Strength":
- Move to an area where it will provide a better signal strength. Make sure there are no "obstacles" (for example; walls) between you and the wireless access point.
- Avoid other 2.4 GHz interference sources, e.g. microwave oven, 2.4 GHz cordless phone, and Bluetooth equipment.
9. Why do interferences with other 2.4 GHz wireless devices sometimes occur?
The current wireless LAN products and some other consumer appliances use the same radio frequency (2.4 GHz). The interference from them is unavoidable.
10. What should I do if my wireless connection is consistently interrupted?
Move your wireless device around for a better signal strength.
11. Why can I not access network resources, even when the wireless signal quality is good?
Check that you have connected to the SMUGIP wireless network and NOT "peer to peer computer".
If you have good signal quality that means your wireless card is connected to the wireless hotspot correctly. So, now you have to check the configuration of your wireless device.
The SMUGIP network is set to issue the IP automatically to a wireless client. Reboot your wireless device if necessary.
12. Why can't my "wireless client" obtain the IP address automatically?
The "wireless client" software on your computer has to be set to Infrastructure mode or Access Point under network mode. Reboot your wireless device if necessary.
If the problem still persists after the second system bootup, it might result from some incorrect configuration of the wireless adapter, e.g. wired equivalent privacy (WEP) enable, wrong network ID. By default, there is no WEP set.
13. Will the security of my computer be compromised by using wireless access?
For better security, you may wish to install a firewall program to protect your wireless device from outside threat. Always disconnect when you are not using it.
For SMU User, you are strongly encourage to use the campus 802.1x secured access configuration that provides encryption for security and additional bandwidth with tiered service allocated.
14. Will the security of my computer be compromised by using wireless access?
You can manually logout by entering http://logout. in the URL of your browser. Note that the final dot "." is required for some browsers. If you switch off your wireless computer and leave the hotspot service without disconnecting, the network will automatically log you out within 10 minutes.
The system is also set to have a 20 minute idle time-out. This means that the network will automatically log you out if there is no activity from your wireless computer for more than 20 minutes.
15. What is an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?
This is a minimum acceptable, moral and legal standard for customers to use this Wi-Fi service. Singapore Management University will take actions against User who breach this AUP.
16. I'm a SMU Faculty/Staff/Student and I wish to access the internet using my portable devices like PDA and Wireless Smart Phone, can I use the SMUGIP?
Yes, you can configure your devices to use the SMUGIP network.
SMU Users can continue to use your existing domain account userid and password for access and do not require any registration.
Note that the SMUGIP is unencrypted and is prone to eavesdropping and only serve as short term internet access. SMU users that uses this network will not enjoy the reserved bandwidth and security.
SMU Users are strongly encouraged to use the campus 802.1x secured access configuration that provides encryption for security and higher bandwidth with tiered service allocated.
17. Why after connecting my notebook to SMUGIP, I can't browse to SMU Library Resources and SMU portal and applications?
Please note that wireless access using SMUGIP will restrict user to only Internet (no access to SMU Resources); unless VPN is used. Furthermore, lower bandwidth is being allocated to this visitor network.
SMU Users are strongly advised to use the WLAN-Faculty, WLAN-Staff, WLAN-Student, etc respectively for encrypted/secured access to enjoy tiered bandwidth allocation and single sign-on access to SMU Resources.
